The Katyn Massacre was the planned and systematic murder of thousands of Polish military officers and intelligentsia by the Soviet secret police. It was the Nazis who discovered mass graves in the Katyn forest (in Russia) and used the information to spread anti-Soviet propaganda. At the time, the Soviets completely denied any responsibility and accused the Nazis of perpetrating this crime. It wasn’t until 1990 that the supporting documents (signed orders by Stalin to liquidate the Polish officer POWs) were unearthed in the former Soviet archives.
